Level 2 3M Certification HOLY &#%!!!!
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:40:24 PM »
Im in Whitby Ontario doing my Level 2 certification for 3M and in order to pass there are 13 stations, at the level 2 there is no time limit, and the first station I tackled is a Chevy HHR front bumper. This is by far the most INSANE thing I have ever attempted, my final result passed with only 8 point deductions for tiny scratches, a slight discoloration in a heavy stretch area and I fergot to trim out a reflector. You are allowed upto 20 point deductions out of 100. Problem? It took me 3 hours to do it, in the final test yer allotted 2 hours to do it  :o

Not bad for the first time tho, take a look at all the compound curves, multiple angles and the print pattern is BRUTAL, any major stretching shows up instantly.

You are becoming a master at this. I think most people look at this and think it's easy, they don't have a the first clue what it takes to master this craft. I've seen some wraps in my area and even I can see that they look like crap. Not trimmed right, edges curling up. And what gets me is someone paid good money for crap.

You are really getting the hang of it, it doesn't matter how long it takes, at least in the beginning, so long as it's a quality install. Keep up the great work and good luck on the rest of the test. We're all pullin for ya!

That course looks daunting. I stopped by a local sign distributors shop today to meet an greet, grab som vinyl, and walked in on a wrap class they offer quarterly. I'm on the list for the next one. Can't wait.

Well im level 2 certified! It was something lemme tell ya, alot to take in in only 2 days. You're absolutely right Mr. P there are alot of hacks running around out there putting on really bad wraps and thats the reason why 3M does these installer training courses, they understand that the installer is a HUGE part of the success and long term durability of a wrapped vehicle.

I would recommend taking wrap training to ANYONE in our field even if your just doing decals, its a real eye opener and more knowledge is always a good thing, even if its not 3M, Avery Mactac Oracal all offer training, like lasershark said even supply companies do it.

Took a few more pics, sorry about the quality there's something wrong with my iPhone, I think I dropped it one too many times, this is a Caravan rear door and perf, notice the double compound curve on the glass, installed with NO HEAT. Also the sprinter door with the deep channels, you need rollers and a stolen drinking straw from McDonalds (MUST BE McDonalds AND STOLEN) to pull that off without any cuts in the material, & a wall graphic applied to drywall, with an overlap that you must line up perfectly.

Cheers!
Ben
