Car Hood Wrap
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:38:30 AM »
Im looking to wrap the hood of a car with a carbon fibre material.  I use FDC films mainly and i know they have an R-Tape Carbon Fibre material.  Does anyone know if this will work well for an entire hood wrap or is there a better carbon fibre wrapping mask out there from a different company?

Oracal 970RA (or 975?) BLACK! I love it, it has a bit more of a gloss finish then the 3m does... its wont give you the depth of real CF but for someone who doesnt know what real CF looks like it fools them every time....
Ive used it on tons of stuff for people

HD have you had any issues with the 970RA Matte Black? We've wrapped a few cars at shows with it and found it to be quite shitty. We even had the Oracal Sales Reo there and he didnt have any answers as to why it was doing what it was doing.  :o

What was it doing booper? I've had a few inquiries for matte black but haven't sold one yet. I just got a 970ra matte black sample today and I'm unimpressed with the look of it.

Is 3m's matte black a lot nicer?

The oracal carbon is nice, it's textured, has a feel to it.

The 3M's matte is more "matte" than the Oracal, I would say the Oracal was more "satin" than Matte but thats a personal perference thing.

The issues we were having was when you try and reposition the material it leaves tiny little bits of glue behind which will leave little bumps under the finished wrap, from 6 feet away you cant see it but when yer dealing with "matte wrap customers" trust me they notice.

The second issue is the thickness isnt even. When doing stuff like complex bumpers you will need to prestretch and restretch areas that have heavy compound curves, with the 3M material we never had any problems but with the Oracal stuff ive had areas blow apart when ive applied medium to moderate pressure from behind ruining hours of work and hundred of dollars of material

Third, you cant use primer. If you use primer it will melt the glue off the vinyl and render it useless. For deep channels and indents you NEED primer for it to last more than a few days. We asked the Oracal rep about all of these issues and he basically said it was just vinyl and it has its limitations, but they were working on it.   :o
