I would go with something other than plywood, ask Thor about his plywood experience!
Quote sorry about the old thread, but I searched to find this one. My sign I'm making for a bar is A/C plywood.. supposedly sanded and grade A on one side - it's rougher than heck! I painted it well, two coats primer, sanded, cleaned, painted two coats semigloss acrylic exterior, and let cure.. (in 60 degree shop) ..Applied graphics and was working on mounting lettering (It's going to be raised off the sign), and noticed the edges peeling on the vinyl!!
I am just short of scrapping it all and re-doing it.. I'm going to try to weight it down tonight to see if it helps.. Otherwise, I peel everything off and re start.
damn.
and never use wood again!

You can probably get a sheet of alumium that is powder coated for just a little more than the plywood and it would hold up much longer.
If he wants to go cheap you could mount Coro-Plast

If you have a N.Glantz or Fellers nearby you can get full sheets of Aluminium or Steel that is already painted pretty cheap and if you live in their delivery area its only $3 or so for delivery!

i have a fellers and grimco like 40 mins away but i dunno if he wants to pay however much it will be. i did just call a local sign shop though and can get 2 pieces of coro the size i need for like $30 which from looking up the price of plywood seems to be the same price if not cheaper. imma pitch that idea to him
