Making my own banners - suggestions?
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:31:34 AM »
So I'm going to make a few banners, mostly for myself for events I attend, and one for my sister who has a handmade jewelry business.

Buying the pre-made banners seems ok, but thats pricy, and not very flexible. Plus I'd need to buy more if I get a job making one.

Making them from scratch seems plausable, but thats a lot of work and equipment.

Checking Feller's catalog I came across the pre-made banner rolls... edges hemmed, and grommeted. I'd just need to hem the cut sides, thats no big deal.

Then I saw them advertising hem tape. Anyone used it? How well does it work?

They also have two types, 2 sided hem tape (I assume you put it on the edge, fold it over, and it's stuck), and a 1 sided. The 1 sided is twice as expensive as the 2 sided ones (Powertape). How would that be used? Fold it down, tape it on top? I'd imagine that would look less professional.

Is anyone familiar with banner hem tape, which is good, and whats worth the money?

Here's what I'm looking at: (Each is about 1-1.5" wide, 36 yards)
Takit 2-sided, $12.39 a roll
Tuff Tape II, 2-sided, $12.39 a roll.
Oracal 1395, 2-sided, $10.29 a roll, but says not recommended for anything over 10oz - I'm getting 13, so this is out.
Megatape, 2-sided, $29.99 a roll (!!), but claims to be infinitely stronger, can withstand 98mph winds, etc. Is it worth 2x the cost?

And:
Powertape, 1 sided, $25.99 a roll

And again, I'm 99% likely to buy a roll of pre-hemmed and grommeted banner (Bandanna Banner, double grommeted so its not wasting any banner when cutting, 13oz, 22" wide, 24 yards, $97) so I only need to hem the edges, not the tops/bottoms.

No wide format printer yet so I dont need a roll to print, so for now a roll to apply to will suffice.

Any exprience with these tapes? Anyone try that banner and hate it?

for about $225 you can buy a sewing machine that will handle it (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?CATID=cat2097&PRODID=zprd_02458321a), There's a guy at my local sign supply that makes their banners in his garage with one and they look just like the ones I get at my local N Glantz for about $6 less.

I already have a pretty powerful sewing machine. Guess I could just stitch the ends, wouldnt be the end of the world to do that. Would probably look nicer too and not have the hassle of getting the tape lined up right, mis-sticking, etc. You're probably right, esp since I already have the sewing machine...

If your sewing machine can handle it I would invest in a good grommet press and buy the banner roll material that is not pre-sewn and grommeted and that will probably save you a nice amount of cash still. and you will be able to make any size banner you want then.

:-\ We have one of these, I still find it much more convenient to buy them ready made rather than store a bunch of banners till I need them or worse in my opinion, making them as I need them.
