I just got asked this question....
« on: January 05, 2012, 07:24:33 PM »

What makes your mugs and water bottles so much better than the ones I can get from Walmart? Walmart mugs only $10.00 how much yours?

Ok I'm stumpped!!  My reply was, for $15.00 I will make you a mug that not only can be personalized with words and pictures, I can put a nice border around your pictures arrange them how you would like use different colors for fonts and use different types of fonts instead of the regular block and script fonts. and for $18.00 I can make you a water bottle the same way.

Yea I'm kinda lost now.  What do you all do to make your mugs, water bottles, mouse pads different???  GOT any PICTURES that you are willing to post so that I can get a general idea??????

How about your responses what would they be to this question.

Thanks for the help!!!

I have been asked this a couple of times and my response was. "Purchasing from me supports a local small business and I offer more of a personal touch to the mugs. Also walmart mugs are made outside the local area and shipped in." so far they have agreed and purchased with me. Plus I pitch them with the other products I can offer that  Walmart does not. I primarily use the 15oz mugs and show them the difference between the 2 and they like the bigger mugs.

I charge 10.00 for the 15oz and 9.00 for the 10oz so have never been asked that question . . . I figure I have 2-2.50 into each mug and that is a nice mark up.  only time it is different if there is a lot of design time.  with meijer selling for about that same price and being a michigan based company it would not work for me to tell them it is from out of the area - meijer is everywhere in Michigan and based in Grand Rapids, supporting many Michigan charities

To me the answer here is simple.  I am putting a unique and customized embellishment on the products for the customer.  Walmart does not.

I've been asked that as well lately....specifically on the iPhone covers.  "Why buy from you when I can go to Walmart and get one for a few dollars less?"  Do any of the covers at Walmart have your photos on them?  Can Walmart put anything you want on it?  You may not pay as much at Walmart...but you won't get what I offer there. They can't do what I can.

Same on the mugs or mousepads.  Save a few bucks for something cheap or get something that is real quality with YOUR image or design on it.  Make it "your's", not what Walmart wants you to have.

The personalization sells it.

Wow 10.00 for a 15oz. and 9.00 for a 10oz. thats cheap..  My mugs alone cost me $5 -5.50 each for a 11oz. and $8.00 - 8.75 for the 15oz. depending where I get them from.

Nothing is ever cheap here in Hawaii.  I admit I also shop for the cheapest prices because everthing is so expensive here.  So when I get asked questions like this I have a hard time selling this items..

What do you tell the customers that tell you but walmart can put my same photo that you can on a mug for $10.00 i don't need all the fancy borders and colors and stuff, plus they have temples that I can put photos and text in ??

I have no comeback for people like this and that is why I wanted to see what others would say.

Thanks

This statement is true for the iphone covers only as far as I know walmart does not offer personalized Iphone covers.  However they do offer Personalized Mugs and Mousepads.

Location is the key - in Hawaii everything is more expensive due to shipping - so the selling price would be more. strange though that most items come from containers shipped from china - seems they could drop a few off  on the way to the mainland cheaper   :D

I'd ask them whether they would prefer a nice homemade chocolate cake for their birthday with freshly made homemade ice cream, or would they rather have a Walmart lil Debbies cupcake with some walmart ice cream..

It is an apples and oranges comparison..

Other comparisons...

Mc Donalds Apple pie  vs Grammas..

Earl Sheib vs House of Kolor paint jobs

Custom Furniture vs cheapie furniture store particle board stuff

Handmade jewelry  vs one from the vending machine in front of Wally World..

It is all about getting EXACTLY what you want now, vs a make do mass produced thing.

Push your quality, your attention to detail, your design skills. and the fact that they will have something nobody else owns. This won't work if you have a display of fifty mugs all using Walmart sayings on them in your showroom...
How do I know I am going out of town??Ten people call me for signs by the morning.
