11 oz. Cactus Mugs Cracking
« on: January 05, 2012, 06:49:50 PM »

Has anyone had the problem with mugs cracking when cooling down?

I have 3 cracked 11oz.cactus mugs that cracked as soon as i put them in hot/warm water.

I use wraps in a convection oven 400 degrees at 12.5 minutes. Take them out let them sit for a minute or so and then I slowly put them in water that is not boiling but its not warm either.  I like to take hot baths but this water would be alittle too hot for me to bathe in..  The last mug I put in warm water and that cracked too.

How do you do yours?

I dont us Cactus mugs and I use a heat press but I pull the mugs out of the press take the paper off and put them directly into room temperature water.  I have never had a cracking issue with any of the different ceramic mugs I have used.  The only cracking issues I had was with the frosted beer steins and I wasn't even putting them in any water.

Yea I'm not sure what's happening..... Everyone that I talked to even the local supplier here acted like it has never happened before.  Then again they don't sell any sublimation produts besides mugs and mousepads which I was told they are discontinuing because it's not selling...

Sure at $5.00 a mug and $4.50 a mousepad I can see why it's not selling LOL.

Here are two other things you can try since they are cracking on u. Once you take the wraps off try one of these instead of the water.

Put them on a wire rack and put a fan directly on them to cool off.

The other thing you can do is to put them on the rack in the freezer.

These two options hould stop your mugs from cracking.

Thanks for the info, although I have a question if I do it this way will it cool it down fast enough to stop the sublimation process?  or will the heat still cause it to sublimate and possible casuse the ink to "bleed" or discolor?

I've never put the mugs in water. i just remove the mug wrap and let it cool naturally.. I got my mugs from joto so not sure if the cactus ones are any different.

As long as you remove the paper right away.  they should be fine.

Get all my mugs from conde and Joto - never had one crack.  did try some ebay ones in the beginning and had a lot of broken handles when I got them.   I would thing that cactus could make a good mug as them make great wraps . . .glad I never tried them.

No cracking on any of my mugs either. I get mine from Conde. I use "mug11" which is a Thailand mug. I put 'em in water after I pull 'em out of the press. Never had one crack.

I've had a very few crack in the ones I did and I always put them in hot water after pulling out of the press and removing the paper.

I got curious as to why they are cracking so I took one and pulled on it so it broke open on the crack and there were tiny air pockets you could see where the crack was. It's a manufacturing defect. I get all my mugs from Joto but have only had 3 out of 2 cases do that.

I use the mugs from Conde also.  I've never put them in water and have never had one crack.  I've also used Conde's shot glasses with a wrap in the oven.  Again just let them cool at room temperature.  I'm not sure that a water bath is necessary.  I've not had any issues with bleeding or continued dye migration.  My mug press is set at 360 degrees and 2 minute duration once that temp has been reached.  I had issues of scorching the transfer paper too much at 370-400 degrees and leaving a brown haze on the mugs.
