TSC Bench Top Blasting Cabinet - Feel like a idiot setup
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:36:53 AM »
So wifey wants to try her hand at the etching. Shes creative so today ran down to TSC and got her the Benchtop one for 99.00.
Get it home pull it out and seem pretty well built. Figure I'd get it put together for her so when she gets home she be happy and maybe make me happy :-).
Well damnit. I feel like a idiot. I can't figure out how the damn thing goes together. Not sure if its been returned cuz some of what the not so helpful manual says doesn't match.

So anyone who has this one got pics are educate me on how to put it together.
I assume the long bar goes at the bottom of the cabinet on the right side when facing it but not sure why or how it does it thing

I have a round metal piece with looks like a filter in it. Its flat but not mentioned in the manual parts.

And know what size adapter it takes so I can hook it up to the compressor. ones on my current workpieces are too small.

I thought this would be a piece of cake but its calculus to me.

THanks
Mark

Not yet. But after 4 years in the USMC and going thru the gas chambers and being a tatical firefighter for 3 of the 4 years and breathing burning jet fuel, diesel and other stuff not sure how much it will hurt me any more LOL.
Seriously will get one tho.

Biggest issue I have now is getting the hook up to my compressor. Got a porter cable pancake. Its 1/4 but looks like the gun has a 3/8. I dind't see any way at Lowes to convert it over.

Lowe's or harbor freight should have the adaptor fitting you are looking for near the air compressors.  HF usually has these starter kits for around $10 that come with an assortment of adaptors, QD fittings, etc.  Not the greatest stuff in the world, but it will work no problem.

If that doesn't make sense, post a pic of the two different fittings you need to connect and we can help further.

Also, that pancake compressor isn't going to keep up with the cabinet.  You might want to check out the pressure pots, I just learned that they will operate at a much lower pressure.  I have a significantly bigger than pancake compressor and very similar cabinet and it won't keep up.  I have to blast at 80psi just to make the siphon pickup work.

There are 2 types of air fittings industrial and automotive. automotive beeing the more
common make sure you get the right one.
HF has both in 3/8 and 1/4 male and female.
Shouldn't be a problem to get from 3/8 to 1/4.

Do the pressure pots work with the compressor or a stand alone unit ? I'll go search about them too.

Thanks

The pressure pot goes in between the compressor and your cabinet.  You fill it with sand, the compressor pressurizes it and it routes inside your cabinet with a hose.  Otherwise you'll end up having to re-adjust the siphon pick tube all the time in your cabinet.

If you stay away from sand you will cut the health problems by a lot. I use Aluminum oxide black beauty. Cuts faster and does not make as much dust.

im just wondering why would you where and spend all the money on a mask if you bought a cabinet. thats what the cabinet is for. if you have it set up right you will not have a problem. just make sure to have a dust collection system set up( thats what the whole in the side of the cabinet is for) i use a shop vac so the i can reclaim the AO that gets sucked up.

Better safe than sorry. I'm just big on safety, it doesn't cost anything to wear one.

Tiny particles that you really can't see can and could be floating around. Your shop vac may pull the AO into it, but that same vac blows air out. The filters designed for shop vacs do not capture micron size or smaller particles. When you open the cabinet after blasting, at least in mine, I can see some dust swirling around. My vac setup is not perfect, and I'm willing to bet most other setups aren't either. If you are confident that you're capturing 100% with no exhaust you don't need one. But equipment fails, sometimes dramatically.

I just don't want to see anyone here getting sick years later by not taking some common sense precautions. I like most of the people here.

+1 on safety - Stacey has worked in a dental office for 25 years and she has loss of hearing at high frequencies from the drills . . . you never see an assistant wearing hearing protection though.
