Rapid Mask not sticking
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:27:30 PM »
Hi All,
I'm having a heck of a problem with Rapid Mask HD.
I'm trying to blast a design and initials on a beer mug (Libbey 5092)
After cleaning mug, when I apply the RM, it does not adhere to the mug very well.
If I apply wet, the corners will start to pull up.
I have completed quite a few mugs successfully but not consistently.
The symptom is little "blow outs".
I am exposing at 3 minutes per Ikonics suggestion (I emailed the design).
I am blasting at 25 PSI.
The adhesive side after slip has been removed, feels just barely sticky.
Maybe RM HD doesn't do well on curved glass?
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

I've never used it, but are you supposed to do a wet app with it?

They do recommend a wet application.  I think the wet ap might be an issue on a round piece.

what are you cleaning the glass with? did you do a "snap test" to determine the exposure time? are you seeing a definite difference between the exposed and nonexposed mask?

Thanks bb
I definitely see a difference between exposed and not.
I've never really got a real loud "snap" on the the snap test, I even went 4 minutes the other day while testing.
Product Is 2weeks old.
I've reapplied dry, seems to be a better adhesion than wet.

on the snap test, all you are looking for is the material to break not just bend. the snap is not very loud.

I had the same issue. I called the company and was told they had a bad batch (lot # L0301 I think). They replaced the entire box and threw in some extra for my trouble.  It would have been nice if they told us the batch was bad before we screwed up our glasses, but at least they made it right. Hope this helps.

Wow,
Thanks.
I just got another box the other day.
Funny thing, the material was very sticky, nothing like the last box.
Did a couple mugs with the new box and they came out great.
Looks like I had a bad batch too, I'll contact the tomorrow.
I'm sure they are good for it, I've always had good support from Ikonics.
Lesson learned, I should have considered a bad batch from the start.
