Complex Curves Vinyl Apply Question
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:53:18 PM »
I know there is a post in here that shows how to apply vinyl to curved bowl but how about a complex curve glass?  One that curves around like normal but also has a hump in the middle of the glass.

Any suggestions on how to apply the vinyl with minimal stretching and bubbling?

Post a pic if you have one. It'll help folks to see what's what. Then they might be able to point you in the right direction. Just a suggestion.

You have to make relief cuts so the vinyl lays flat
then tape over you cut lines

Thanks for that chart and the link to the explanation of how to use it.  That info is great for text only pieces but what about logos and images that you want on glasses?   Is the relief cut process the best way to go and then just practice and practice?

It helps to warm the glass and vinyl up with a hair dryer before/while applying it.  With blasting, you don't have to be as concerned with the wrinkles that will result from tight stretches, as long as you don't overly distort the graphic or stretch the vinyl too thin.

Never hear of the hair dryer trick, I'll have to give it a try. I got some serious wrinkles in the dog bone jar I did a while ago. Even got wrinkles in the graphic, it doesn't have the bulge you have though. But it was a pain in the a$$.

Has anyone ever tried to do a "wet application" on some glass to be blasted? I don't know that you could blast it the same day but it might help in getting things lined up. Just a thought.

Paint Mask might be worth a try, it's more flexible than vinyl and is fairly easy to stretch if needed.

Paint Mask

I got some to experiment with, but don't you think that it might distort the design? Or am I over thinking it?

It depends how detailed and complex your design is, but it will sit a lot better than using vinyl.
Give it a try and see how it performs.

I tried to wet apply to this glass but it just didnt want to stick, maybe too much water or the glass might have had a film on it but either way it didnt work.  Im gunna try the relief cut method next time i do it and see how that works.

I looked for this post but couldn't find it. Anyone got the link to it. I have several bowls to practice on.
Thanks
