moving to digital print
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:24:01 PM »
Hi,

I am new with digital print vinyl. Mainly i need it for car wrap, signage...

What should I know/prepare before getting a digital printer like Roland VersaCAMM SP-300I/SP-540I

I've heard that are few different inks like solvent, UV, etc... i dont know which one is the best for me.
Can anyone give some advice?

After printing on the vinyl, does it has to laminated 1st before apply to car/etc?

how about software side, flexi8.6v2 works with digital printer?

many thanks

Get a versacamm and use versaworks - took a lot of the headaches out of the process for me.
The printers you listed use eco solvent ink (corrected)
you will need to laminate for long term vehicle use like a wrap -

Watch out for the latest scam on craigslist advertising sp300I and sp540I for incredible price - we have found them from Jacksonville, fl to Cleveland Ohio.  the person will email you back with an message there son posted it on the internet everywhere and they are in another location like Maine . . . .

several members also have had good luck with the mutoh products from places like signwarehouse - so far I'm hard core Roland printer and Graphtec cutter - Personally.

get a fellers catalog and also be ready to drop some serious change on vinyl and laminate - and a laminator. - this is where I am - looking for that killer deal on a over 30" laminator.  best price I found is 1500.00 for the diage solo that has got mixed reviews and after buying a camper recently I am had laminating with a Big squeegee

good luck

forgot to mention that I am from Australia.

Currently I've a Creation Pcut CS1200 cutter, do i have to get 2in1 (digital print+cutter) machine?
or just digital printer?

Is SP300i wide enough to do vehicle wrap?

Any good film for digital print (car wrap/signage) and laminate film?

if I was looking to do wraps a lot I would go for the bigger printer, I went small due to working out of the house and most of my printing is actually under 30" and I know a few good printers a state or 2 away that do great work if I need anything bigger,  we will see next year when I go full time

Ok.

Firstly I'm told don't buy a uv curable printer. they are no good for long term applications on vehicle wraps. The vinyls r not as conformable. The inks/ prints tend to crack

Second, a 54" wide is the absolute min i would recommend if u r wrapping. 64" if u can afford it. A standard large car will have a bonnet close to 1500mm wide which means in the 54" print u will need to stretch the vinyl to make it fit or have a join.

how many wraps are u working on doing. These printers are not cheap. Would u consider outsourcing the printing to someone and u do all the wrapping.

Saves u throwing $30k+ at a printer

what is 'silvering' during/after laminating process?

i also have a plan to outsourcing if it is over my budget.

right now i know i need printer, laminator, full roll printing and laminating films, maybe trimmer (after printed film is laminated), etc....

anyone here from Melbourne who is doing digital print? if it possible to visit your workshop?  please pm me. thanks.
