getting started printing with the WF1100.
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:54:22 AM »
Hi All!

I'm fairly new to high quality printing.  Any feedback/advice is always appreciated!

My issue is that I'm getting only so-so results from printing with the Epson WF1100 with cards.  They're printing fine but I'm not happy with the color matching and the quality.  they look "printed", if that makes any sense.  Here is my setup:

 - WF1100, stock inks for now.  (I'm unsure what color/ink profile to use)
 - Matte Card stock (Should I be doing gloss/semi-gloss and/or photo paper grade card stock?)
 - my original jpg is at 300 dpi.  From my experience 300dpi works fine for photos, should I be saving it at a higher res?  This is a line drawing illustration, not a photo.

What could I be doing different?  I'm sure it's me since my photos are coming out just fine.  Thanks in advance!

I'm not minding the results on matte, the color matching is really that is a pain.  I'm still using stock inks.. I haven't taken the plunge with ordering my refillable carts from cobra yet.

I'm getting two totally different results between my linux workstation and my OSX box.  I haven't tried on windows yet.

it seems that I'm having the most problems matching pinks.  Everything else is acceptable.

Color matching is going to be a pain...remember, you are using a low
end/low cost printer.  Even re-printing a file in a few months you may
not get the same color shades.  This printer is not meant for production
printing.  If I print 100 sheets, I have to watch carefully for ink banding,
printhead alignment issues and color shifting....every 20 sheets or so.

With my WF1100 I find that as the ink counters in the printer software
get closer to "replace" time (even with CIS installed) the quality of the
prints suffer.

And, yes, take any file from one printer to another, one system to
another, or one program to another...you will get different color shades.

Sorry, this doesn't solve your problem but maybe you're expecting
too much from this printer.

No worries.  That's an answer. :-)

The WF1100 seems to be the goto printer, at least, it was.  I'm not sure if they make them anymore.
I'm sure half the issue is my ignorance with printing in general and the other half is I don't have a color profile for known inks.  I'll just keep plugging away and see what I can learn.

With the epson software, I choose color match to Adobe RGB 2.2 Gamma, and get near perfect match on both mac and PC.

What inks are you using?
