Graphtec blade depth and pressure
« on: February 07, 2012, 08:09:34 PM »
I'm having trouble getting my blade depth and pressure set correctly on my CE5000. I'm using a clean cut 60 degree blade, which I've been using for a while. When doing test cuts, and adjusting until I get a nice clean cut, I end up with the blade sticking WAY out. My pressure is set to 14, upping it to 15 made no difference.

FYI, it was cutting fine until I took the blade and holder out to clean some residue out of it. When I reinstalled it, I decided to make sure my depth was right. I adjusted the depth until the blade would just cut vinyl and not cut backing. Remounted the holder in the cutter and it barely scratched the vinyl. So I'd do a test cut, turn it out more, do a test cut, turn it out more. Etc. By the time it was cutting the test pattern completely, it was sticking out much too far by any standards.

This sounds stupid, but I did it once. Make sure the blade holder is under the clamp. If it is over the little clamp it will still cut, but the depth will be off.

If that isn't the case, could you attach a picture of your blade holder and if possible against a white piece of paper so we can see the blade if possible?

PS. I'm using a 60 degree on my CE5000 at a pressure of 16, the blade sticks out of the holder about the thickness of a piece of printer paper.

Here is a pic of the detail I am getting.

Thanks for the response. I'll check to make sure I have the holder mounted correctly. It's weird, up until today, when I took it out to clean it, my situation was similar to yours. It barely stuck out and I was getting great detail. It seems like it has to be something I did.

x2 on the clamp it sounds like you have it too high

What exactly are you cutting??

The 60 degree blade is quite intense for sign vinyl or heat press vinyl. I normally use the 60 degree blade for flock or rhinestone templates.

Here are things to check for:

-cut strip look for deep groves and scratches -this means that your blade is way to far out
-take a toothbrush and clean the grooves the metal roller to make sure there isn't any residue keeping the roller from flowing freely
Distributor for vinyl and heat press supplies:
-Specialty Materials
-KNK/Accugraphics
-Geo Knight Heat Press and Accessories
-GCC Vinyl Cutters

I checked and double checked the clamp. The holder is mounted correctly. And the blade still has the spring in it. This is driving me nuts. To recap, it was cutting fine. I removed the blade holder and blade to clean it. I checked the blade height and set it so when dragging the blade holder by hand across vinyl, it cut only the vinyl and not the backing. Reinstalled the holder, and now I'm getting incomplete cuts. It's not cutting the whole way through vinyl.

Ok, update. So I've had some more time to monkey around with my cutter. I *think* what I'm dealing with here is a blade with a broken tip. I say I think that's the problem, because even with good lighting, and using a magnafying glass, I still can't see the tip of this thing. I'm going to need a more powerful magnifying glass. I'm apparently getting old enough to need those glasses that sit on your nose to see close up things. I used to make fun of those. Anyhow, it looked like the very tip may have broke off. One way to be sure was to try a different blade. I had a clean cut 45 deg here, so I tried that. Seems to be back to normal. So, mystery solved.

Let that be a lesson to other folks that may be caught off guard by their crappy vision like me. I couldn't see a problem with this blade, and it never occurred to me that the problem may be my eyes. Off to the store to buy some of those stupid end of the nose glasses now...

A broken tip will sure do it. I had one broken out of the package the other day and Ross fixed me up.

Been there done that now I have a 30x loop on my desk and if anything starts acting up I look through the loop including looking inside the holder for little bits of stuck vinyl.  Glad you figured it out...

I use 60* blades for sign, heat press vinyl, rhinestone material and am not happy with clean cut blades.  just my opinion.

I needed glasses starting at about 40. I waited for about 5 years before I broke down and got them. ($700) <--Ouch BUT, I could not believe the things I was missing out on. And even colors looked better. Now that I am north of coughcough 50, it's time to get a new set of glasses. :'( Let's see, how much vinyl will that cost me?  :o  Anyway, last year I picked up a pair of Opti-visor's and have been very happy to be able to see the little stuff.

Glad you found out what was causing you so much trouble. I will also keep it in mind, just in case . Thank you.

It's funny you should say that. I've been very happy with the clean cut blades, and you're the first person I've seen post that doesn't like them. To each his (or her) own. ;-)

So Mike What is it that you don't like about our blades, have you called us to try to make them right with you?  I am sorry you don't like them, but I can't fix a problem that I do not know about.
