App tape application
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:07:05 PM »
So I often use the double roll trick to apply app tape, but it's not always the best choice. I see lots of app tape dispensers. Many seem crazy expensive for what they are. But there's permanent bench mounts, hand held models, even special squeegees made for applying app tape to vinyl. So, what are you guys using that you like? I don't mind spending money on one, but at the price of them, I don't want to have to buy and try several.

2 things - big squeegee and second - just lay the app tape sticky side up on table and apply the graphics to it

My husband made mine.
It's a bench mounted one that stands tall, great for long runs for signs & banners.
Photo was before I moved to my new shop. He revised it & now it holds tape up to 24" wide.

I was thinking of making one similar, but I can't figure out how to incorporate a clutch. I feel like it needs something to provide some tension.

So the big squeegee, it's a good investment? I've looked at it, but $100 for a squeegee, it has to really earn its keep.

You don't have to worry about a clutch the adhesion will hold it back.   Just drag out as much as you need then cut it off.

I have a BS which os amazing, but smaller stuff lime Dakota said.... Lay the transfer tape face up and lie your graphics onto it. Works like a charm every time.

Thanks. That's what I do on small stuff. It was the big stuff I was having trouble with. I did a 15' long banner last week and it was a pain to use the double roll method on it. I had a hard time keeping everything straight and lined up. I decided to find a better way.

So I ordered a Big Squeegee yesterday, it arrives tomorrow. I got the cut vinyl model. I figure I don't need a laminator model, and the one for yard signs and the cradle thing looks like I could easily make one. I appreciate all the advice, I'll be sure to let you guys know what I think.

I got my Big Squeegee today. (Fast shipping, thanks US Cutter!) Mine didn't come with the instructional DVD though, like it's pictured on the website, so I'll have to drop them a line. I'll be using it tonight to apply some tape to vinyl, I'll post my review. It better work good. It's a pretty simply looking hunk of plastic for $100, but if it lives up to its claims, it will be well worth it.
