In my situation, it probably won't be me hanging it up, but merely ceasing to exist.  (As a contractor) I haven't started a complete house in over two years, my last remodel/addition started one year ago, and I've not paid myself since about September.  There are some small furniture projects here and there.    The vinyl gives me $50 - $100 or so at a time, but I never pay myself out of that.  It is just a self sustaining business.  I continuously post my little accomplishments anywhere I can as cheap advertising.  We are able to survive, and it is really not a bad thing.  At some point it will just no longer make sense to keep up with paying for licensing, insurance, etc. and I will cease to be "Open Collar Carpentry, Inc."  It is difficult bidding the small jobs that are out there because I'm bidding against these little fly-by-night, uninsured, non-tax paying, back of the pick up, guys who are working for cash in hand.  With the vinyl, it's just the opposite.  It is difficult to bid against the "Big Boys" who can print a tee-shirt for pennies, print a wrap, or provide a banner for $20 and tell everyone that cut vinyl is the "old, extinct" way to label a car.  So ending the businesses may not be my choice.  I am looking at my options.  In fact, I've been practicing: "Would you like fries with that?" and, "Welcome to Wall-Mart!"  How'd I do?   ;D

Sad that regardless of how the media and our government spin it, we're all still hurting out here in the 'real world'. The problem however is that we will continue on this discourse until we force the banks to invest in the people again, instead of spending their money on politicians that can be bought and CEO's that get paid Win or Lose.

Those in control of our government need everyone to BELIEVE!

Why should any one of us believe figures that are provided by
the very same people who WANT to be re-elected?
The SPIN is to WIN.

But is it the truth?

go go polyanna.  i am reading everyone's posts and getting really sad....i have too learned much and appreciate you all...but i know how it feels and being the mother of four younguns plus a full time day joy and having a reallllly small space to work out of, i also look at my cutter in the corner surrounded by toys and think about putting it away for awhile.  but then i think of how my business put 500 or so bucks in my pocket around christmas time and i know that it sure helps out.

sleep on it...don't ditch it, just take a breather.   :-[

I agree that business it tough with our current economy but as camsmom said, "sleep on it...don't ditch it, just take a breather". We all have our good and bad times. I am a retired and cut and sandblast as a hobby and the extra money allows us to eat out a little bit more often. Take a vacation for a while and weigh all the facts before you make your decision.

I honestly can't see mothballing my machine ever, simply because as long as I've had it it's always brought me something either extra or necessary every single week I've owned it. Even when I didn't take any new projects while in orientation for my current day job, I managed to barter free lunches from my new coworkers by cutting them decals for their cars. Luckily, I never "upgraded" from my $180 pcut because there's never going to be a need to look at it as a waste of money or an item to eBay.

Some very good points by all. My main reason is space and time.

Working a full time job plus running the webhosting along with an auction site and doing sign stuff on the side leaves little time for relaxing. I might just end up cutting back and taking a break for a while. I still plan on going to that show so maybe that will reignite the spark for me as well.

Well, you DO seem to be burning the candle at both ends.
Personal & relaxing time is important.

I love the creative part of this business/hobby...
wouldn't want to give that up.  It's relaxing to me...
even just creating vectors from who knows what!

It's been very depressing reading these posts, hang in there guys, I'm with "camsmom & rc-arty".  Please just save some of your equipment to be able do the odd project here and there and keep doing what you've loved doing all these years.  Don't rely on it for a living, but as an outlet and a hobby, when things do pick-up you're not too far away.  There's nothing worse thinking of an idea or seeing something you'd like to make and saying "I wish I hadn't sold my gear".  I'm retired now and only do the odd job that suits me, I could have sold everything off, but the way it is now when I come across a job that I like to take on it's a pleasure and not a task, it's not a living either but an enjoyable hobby that keeps the beer fridge full.

Selling off your equipment now is only a quick fix and money is soon gone.  The equipment costs a lot more the second time around and a lot harder too justify the expense, so guys don't let it all go.

That's very true. I haven't done anything yet but It has crossed my mind multiple times. Still planning on doing this one show next month and going to start scaling back a bit on what I have in stock. I really enjoy the dye sub stuff but I haven't really done a formal cut sticker in a really long time now.

I was given a larger printer that needs some work so that is keeping me busy. It's kind of renewed a bit of the spark. I guess I find it as a bit of a challenge to see if I can breath live back into it. XD

Hang in there Claw, scale back what you need too but keep some spare fuel in the tank.  Make that show next month the best gig you've ever done, make it winner.

All best of luck with it.

I'm real sorry to hear that so many people are considering this. But, it is understandable. You have to do what's right for you and your families. That's what comes first and foremost. Some of the issues that some folks are dealing with, taking care of others, I have done and still do. It's hard sometimes.

I have learned a lot from all of you guys and gals. For that I am forever grateful. If it weren't for your advise and support I wouldn't have started with the wine bottles. While it's not a big money maker it gives me great satisfaction and pleasure doing it. Thank you! Who knows it might make some money some day.

If you all decide to move on please don't be a stranger around here. You will be sorely missed by many of us.

I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do and hope for.

Like MonkeyMeMe I haven't been on this forum too much lately, although I do pop in and read the posts. This thread brought tears to my eyes. I wouldn't be nearly as far ahead in my knowledge if it hadn't been for so many of you. You've inspired and encouraged me. I am and will be forever grateful.
