Thinking about hanging it up....
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:24:22 PM »
As I work full time (Mon-Fri) and also run my web hosting company and do the vinyl and dye-sub on the side. I have gotten to the point now where I am ready to slow down. The money is nice but I honestly thing I'm done with the vinyl scene. I want to focus more on my web hosting as it brings consistent profits each month and my vinyl stuff which only brings a boost every now and then so I don't heavily advertise any of it

I have a show at the End of March that I'm selling at as a Dealer and plan on making up a good portion if not all of my dye-sub items I have in stock with my designs to sell pre-made then not ordering anything else. Possibly selling off the equipment I have and such. Anything left over I will just try to unload on craigslist or eBay

It's been 5+ years now since I started and I think it's about time to move on. Not 100% yet on what I will do or what will happen but the thought just lingers in the back of my mind a lot.

I stopped periodically in the past (since returning to banking) however because all my stuff is all paid for multiple times over I keep it and only work the jobs that I want to (aka. 'low hanging fruit') and thus ALWAYS have extra cash without sacrifice.
Besides, all of it was purchased originally to supply stickers for my own needs only.
Good luck!

I work a full time job as well (police dispatcher) and also still do some part-time with a local radio station (25 yr radio vet) AND do vinyl and dye-sub.  Closed up the dye-sub and vinyl shop in 2001 (burned out).  Decided to get back in the vinyl business two years ago and the dye sub business last year.  I do the vinyl work when the need arises and if I want to take the job. I enjoy the dye-sub side much more this time around than last time.

Good luck with whatever you decide!  On a side note, you do great work!

I know how you feel, I actually just cut of my sponsorship on a car website i sponsored.... I do signage and stuff all day long and its been draining to come home and have to do hours of proofs and layouts on stuff and then have people back out because they thought prices were to high for "just a sticker"
I still highly enjoy working my normal job, and im keeping my equipment to make stuff for myself, friends and family.

Hope you do what makes you happy, i did and i feel way better/ less stressed!
I work in a sign shop and learn something new every day.

I have been weighing the same idea. I don't do vinyl any more since I had to downsize when I moved. With my recent printer issues I've considered just closing up shop and selling everything off and cutting my losses. I've also considered getting one of the Ricoh printers but not sure if I want to drop $400 into the printer just to end up getting out of the biz later.

I am thinking of selling everything off and if I get a request for something to just sub it out to people on here.

I hate to hear so many hanging it up but I do understand the reasoning. For those of thinking of getting out, don't forget your friends here and turn us on to some of your leads and your equipment before craigslist LOL  ;)

Oh I plan on offering my stuff up here first at a cheaper price than I will sell on craigslist. I have lots of sub blanks and a mug press that I will offer here. my heat press is too big to ship so if someone locally wants that we can work out a deal.

I will probably take this weekend and get a count of everything and post something up then.

I understand what you guys are saying.... if it wasn't for our aluminum & glass business, I would have sold everything & gotten out of this. It is long hours, lowballers wanting something for nothing & a lot of stress at times. But since I have my shop at home & have all my equipment, I'm just going to continue with what little bit comes in & hope things improve.
I hate to see the family going in different directions, but we have to do what we need to. These are serious times and I don't think they are going to get better anyways soon.
Chad, you are like a brother & I hope that you continue to drop in & let us hear from you. The same goes for anyone else that moves forward. Keep in touch.  :'(

I agree with everyone,   it's always a shame to see folks from the family leave but it happens in every walk of life.  It's just a fact people come and go.  Just today I was looking at some old posts and it reminded me of Joe Camero and Pirate Dave both who I hope have moved on to bigger and better things.

I myself am very lucky to have this as a hobby,   even though it has turned more business  I did my time I have my Disabled Vet pension, my police Dept. pension and now started my SS,   so I feel very fortunate in this day and age to be able to sit back and relax a little.

I wish all of you the best of luck and would hope that you guys would pop in every now and then although that doesn't seem to happen and let us know how your doing  ...

I can definately say if I hang up my hat on the sub stuff I will still hang out here for all the friendship and pass on any knowledge that I have gotten! I may pick it up later but for now living in a apartment and having a disabled mother to take care of its taking alot of my time and I dont have the orders to be printing weekly so my printers are causing big headaches.

I'm real sorry to hear that so many people are considering this. But, it is understandable. You have to do what's right for you and your families. That's what comes first and foremost. Some of the issues that some folks are dealing with, taking care of others, I have done and still do. It's hard sometimes.

I have learned a lot from all of you guys and gals. For that I am forever grateful. If it weren't for your advise and support I wouldn't have started with the wine bottles. While it's not a big money maker it gives me great satisfaction and pleasure doing it. Thank you! Who knows it might make some money some day.

If you all decide to move on please don't be a stranger around here. You will be sorely missed by many of us.

I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do and hope for.

I don't think I will be going anywhere. Everyone on this forum is great! I'm still going to see how this show goes coming up and just kind of decide from there. Last year I did great and this one I plan on making a lot more.

I have a tiny work room and it gets frustrating sometimes. The extra bit of money is nice but it's not consistent enough and I would rather focus more on the web hosting company as I can see it being there for the long term. :)
