shipping options
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:10:08 PM »
A big part of our business in online and I'm getting frustrated with the USPS service in general.  Prices and procedures between different clerks differ way too much and I'm just basically getting annoyed.

I'm curious of what you all use ? UPS, Fedex? print at home labels?

usps has been far safer for mys shipments than ups by far.  fed ex is good also - usually print thru usps site and have them pick up (or print thru paypal!).    If you ever need shipping tape I have a ton - 966 yard rolls by 2.69" for 18.00 + actual shipping  these are equal to about 16 regular rolls!

Print thermal labels from stamps.com or endicia. stamps, has a free shipping scale when you sign up. endicia has refurbished zebra printers.

also fedex and UPS have there own divisions that use usps

FedEx smart post
ups mail innovations

so you can use your FedEx or UPS pickups for your usps, needs.

but you need to be a commercial business for these 2 options

hrm.. most services require a monthly subscription fee eh?

I'm going to play around with paypal's click to ship options and probably get a scale.  I ship glass so it'll have to be more than the 5lb one that most places offers.

If I was shipping glass, a monthly subscription fee would be the least of my worries.
If I were shipping more than 5lbs, I would look into more than just the post office to ship my stuff.
FedEx and UPS accounts are free to sign up and offer discounted shipping.
But, once you get the volume you contact a Sales Representative to get you deeper discounts.
We got a wireless scale from Sam's Club for like $40-50..http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod1170170&navAction=#BVRRWidgetID

Yes, I agree.  I don't have the volume going out to really go all out here, but our business is increasing.  I'm not happy about shipping glass in general, but it just seems how things are going.

I think step 1 would be to get a scale and see what kind of discount shipping that fedex accounts and ups accounts offer.  I've shipping through a UPS store before and even though the service is good, the prices seemed a bit high.  Hopefully online accounts could balance that out a bit.

is good, the prices seemed a bit high.  Hopefully online accounts could
balance that out a bit.

You have to realize that the UPS Store is a franchise and does
have to pay rent & utilities on top of the UPS shipping fees.
Although they do get a discount on shipping charges from UPS.
They too have to make a profit.  So that may not be the best cost
option unless you only have a package now and then.

If you have UPS pick up a package at your home you pay a
fee for them to come to your house on top of the shipping charges.
You might check into a UPS Smart Pick-up" account.  There is
a weekly fee and they only show up when you process a package.
