anybody do billboards?
« on: January 11, 2012, 07:49:18 AM »
Potential customer wants quote on a 10' X 32' billboard.  He bought 8 new sheets of Alumacorr.  I'm already in  contact with someone here for a large part of the sign to be printed, due to its size.  Do I just figure in total vinyl usage and time?  It is simple layered lettering on black background - no artwork.  Owner is a pro auto painter - will be painting sign to appear as a window..

I know usually billboards are either the banner-type stretched-over a frame type thing or "papered"? on.. this one's gonna be vinyl..Owner has even entertained clearcoating the thing, but says he wants premium cast vinyl nonetheless.  (I figure he must have some knowledge of the vinyl business..)

With a 24" cutter.. I can do all the necessary lettering without piecing anything together, but have come up with ~ 25 yds of vinyl use..plus the large printed piece.. Should be able to buy just about any premium product for $12/yd or less..

$300 bare vinyl cost
$500 printed/laminated cost (incl markup)
(___) hrs labor  *gads*
???  Missing anything before I go and quote and lose my proverbial ass?

I'd start at $1,200-$1,500 for the job as a whole. I never break down job quotes.

Total bill was 1563..I made a few hundred.. Did whole sign wet apply..got top portion printed professionally (stickermonster).. Did not take pics while putting it together because I had to do it in a large living room floor, and frankly - there was no room for getting a shot.  Took over 6 hours to line up & apply, due to only being able to do 2 panels at a time.

They plan on installing it (themselves) on a billboard sometime this next week.. I want to be present, and I will take pics then..  I am already commissioned to do another one..and it has garnered me several small signs to be attached to trailers.  I will be adding a small maker's sign on the bottom - at the request of the customer! (normally wouldn't do that)..

If you had 6 hours labor and you only made "a few hundred bucks" you aren't charging enough ;)
