Got the 2 part samples, now what?
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:01:25 AM »
So, epoxies sent me two-two part samples. No instructions really other than mix 2:1. So i'm guessing I need a digital scale to measure this out? Do I then mix the two portions together and suck up into a syringe? It doesn't say anything about heating to remove bubbles, does that mean this epoxy doesn't need that? Anyone tried their samples yet to give me some direction? Also, when you're spraying your inkjet printed decals, are you cutting them out individually or spraying the whole sheet and then cutting apart? I mean, if I'm doing say 20 decals, would I print out the decals, cut out on my roland, weed away the excess and spray the whole sheet and cut squares around the decals then dome or would I need to cut exactly around the decal then spray. Wondering if the spray would make the epoxy flow off the decal because of the spray over. Hope you understand what I'm saying. So many questions lol
Thanks, Heidi
Samples received: 20-2621CCL, 20-2621RCL and DC-2501RLVCL, DC-890CHCCL

Also, for those of you doing doming for customers, how are you figuring price mark up for domed decals vs regular decal?

They make dual syringes that give the correct mixture of each component and dispense them through a tube that mixes them on the way out. I think Dakota had some for sale.

When I did mine I just used the little cups
from pharmacy, like the ones on kids cough
syrup, they also gave me a couple syringes.
mix by weight stir with a wood stick slowly
to not get bubbles. Then suck up in syringe
and put on decals. I didn't get any bubbles
at all. And make sure the surface you use is
really flat.(check with level)
Doesn't take much to do 10-20 decals
3/4x1 less than 1/4 oz.

What kind of syringes? Did you mean the pharmacy gave them to you or epoxies? Did you weight it out on a digital scale then put the two parts together and mix?

Jay, have you used those? It says to contact for samples, wonder if they'd send one of each to test. Didn't see pricing though. Would these be reuseable? looks like some kind of a cap on the bottom. I was thinking though that the bottles that have been discussed in other threads would be easier for dispensing the epoxy

I have used them but not from the company I listed. We have them where I work for mixing other adhesives. The tip of the syringe is removable and a cap can be placed back over the tip of the syringe. Put a new tip on the next time you want to use it. They are not made to be re-usable and would be difficult to clean all of the resins from inside. The attached image is what the tips look like. It mixes the two components as they flow through the tip. By the time they come out the other end they are completelly mixed.

Mix 2 to 1 by weight or volume.
weight is better can do smaller amounts.
stir thoughly and use syringe to apply.

I use quite a bit of epoxy in building model airplanes.  You really don't have to be exact to the gram weight.  Measuring cups work quite well.  You won't be able to use the mixing tips or the double syringe idea as they are for epoxies that mix 1:1.  You can use a regular syringe from the pharmacy and when you are done, the epoxy generally doesn't stick to the syringe and you can pop it apart and clean out the set up epoxy.

Hope this is helpful,

Carl,

do you mean 2 of the liquid epoxy and one of the catalyst?

Thanks,

I believe that is what they call for.
I did a couple of things by volume rather
than weight and they turned out good
a little goes a long way.
