Cutter Cable Length?
« on: January 20, 2012, 10:01:33 AM »
Hey Guys, I've been renovating and changing the layout of my workspace and now need to relocate my cutter. Problem is I only got a 6 foot cable (parallel), I purchased a 25 foot cable and no go. Guess it's too long signals just don't reach it.

What are my options...? Can I go longer...? I have a parallel port and serial port on the cutter...

with cutters the shorter the better as the farther the signal has to go the bigger chance of errors happening and some cutters will freak out and cut wildly.

As a rule 15' max for USB 2.0 and serial ranges between 15'-30' depending upon specifications, although 9'-12' feet is considered a 'safe zone' for both. Powered hubs (though not recommended) will get you usable USB up to 90'.
Personally I was running 20' USB 1.0 for a couple of years till I set up my pcut on a wireless print server which worked out great until the computer I had designated for my plotter died and I've not reconfigured my 'temporary' (going on a year) one. I currently have a 12' USB 2.0 in use.

If you need the plotter to be away from where you're working (monitor, keyboard, mouse) I would suggest putting the computer itself with the plotter, get a wireless keyboard/mouse kit, and then get a long monitor cable.  I've run 50' VGA cables for monitors with no issue, and a wireless desktop kit has pretty decent range with a clear view.  This would allow you to work remotely, but keep the pc close to the plotter.
