Changing default Inkscape settings
« on: October 11, 2010, 09:42:11 AM »
I have been using Inkscape more lately and am slowly growing to like it. Is there a way to default the measurements to Inches and have the aspect ratio locked? I made those changes and saved it as default.svg but those settings do not hold.
Thank you,

Chris

These sites offer lots of info on Inkscape.  they are forums similar to this one.  www.inkscapeforum.com  and www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com  I hope these are helpful to people.

Did you try saving a blank document with all of your preferences then just open the blank doc instead of opening Inkscape.

Shift+Cntrl+D - that brings you to the document properties then on the page tab change Default units to in. and then you can also change the custom size units to in. Unfortunately you have to do this every time since none of us have found a way to select it as a default.

To change the default find the "default svg template"
mycomputer:C:\Program Files\inkscape\share\templates\
(Just in case I made a copy of this file if it didn't work)
When you find the 'default template' open with
notebook, look down the file and find the document units
change to "in" save and close.
When you open inkscape should be in inches now.
Doesn't the little lock in upper right corner lock
aspect ratio?

NOTE this worked for me and may work for you.
Please read all before you try and make a backup file.

Okay - stupid here - I finally took the time to look this up (we're snowed in her in NE GA - bored).  Set up your file like you want for a template: inches, (aspect ratio will not default to locked), etc.  Go to "save as".  Name the file "default.svg".  In the place to save, use the drop down and select "templates".  This makes the file you created become your default file when opened, just like you make default spreadsheets, or letterhead documents.  It was too easy.  Any problems, PM me, I'll be glad to help.
